Edward Backs Budget with Major Road and Bridge Upgrades
Infrastructure Minister Shawn Edward has endorsed the 2026 to 2027 national budget, outlining major investments aimed at improving traffic flow, safety, and connectivity along Saint Lucia’s busiest northern corridor.
Among the flagship projects is the reconstruction of the Choc Bridge, estimated at $21.8 million, which will be expanded to accommodate increased traffic.
“The objective of this project is to expand the capacity of the bridge from three to four lanes,” Edward explained. “It makes no sense to have four lanes from the Vigie Airport roundabout going all the way to Gros Islet… and for it to have a bridge with two lanes, three lanes.”
He noted that the upgraded bridge is expected to ease congestion and improve travel efficiency.
“We are also looking to achieve a decreased travel time from Castries to Gros Islet with a newly reconstructed Choc Bridge,” the Minister said, adding that the redesign will also improve water flow. “The new bridge will allow for greater flow as the river moves from the Union area into the sea.”
Edward stressed that the project would follow a transparent procurement process.
“It will be open bidding… we have not fingered any particular contractor,” he said. “Every man and woman in this country who believes that he or she has the capacity… can come and lodge documents, consistent with the procurement legislation.”
The Minister also highlighted a $16 million upgrade to the Sir Julian Hunte Highway, a key arterial route linking Castries to the north. The project, spanning nearly three kilometers, will introduce modern road infrastructure aimed at enhancing both capacity and safety.
“It will be of four lanes, roundabouts, pedestrian bridges, solid concrete median,” Edward stated. He emphasized the safety benefits of the design, particularly the installation of a fixed median barrier. “In the dead of night… reckless drivers will not have the liberty to cross lanes… neither will it allow for vehicles that are speeding to leave the northbound lane and find themselves in a head-on collision.”
According to the Minister, the improvements form part of a broader strategy to modernize transport infrastructure and support economic activity, while prioritizing road safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.
