Police are investigating the death of 31-year-old volleyballer and tennis coach Darrion Roberts, who was found with multiple stab wounds at his apartment in Sunny Acres on the afternoon of Friday, May 22.
Roberts was reportedly discovered by his roommate around 2 p.m., sending shockwaves through Saint Lucia’s sporting community as athletes, coaches and sporting organizations reacted with grief and disbelief.
In a statement issued on May 23, the Saint Lucia Tennis Association described Roberts as “more than a coach and leader”.
“On behalf of the Saint Lucia Tennis Association, it is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Darrion K. Roberts,” the association stated.
“This heartbreaking loss has deeply shaken our tennis family and community.”
The association said Roberts played a significant role in mentoring young athletes and encouraging youth participation in sport.
“Darrion was more than a coach and leader, he was a mentor, a source of encouragement, and a passionate advocate for youth development and physical conditioning,” the statement read.
“His impact reached far beyond the court, touching countless lives through his guidance, kindness, and dedication.”
The organization added that Roberts’ legacy would continue to live on through the many lives he influenced during his years in sport.
“Today we mourn not only a tremendous loss to tennis, but the loss of a remarkable soul whose legacy will forever remain in our hearts,” the association stated.
“Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, players, and everyone whose lives he inspired. Rest peacefully, Darrion. You will never be forgotten.”
Meanwhile, the Saint Lucia Athletics Association also issued a statement mourning Roberts’ passing and recognizing his contribution to athletics and the wider sporting fraternity.
“It is with profound sadness that the Saint Lucia Athletics Association mourns the tragic passing of one of our athletes, Darrion Roberts,” the association said in a statement released on May 22.
The organization noted that Roberts had earned the respect and admiration of many through his dedication and commitment to sport.
“Darrion’s passion for sport, along with his presence both on and off the field, touched the lives of many,” the statement said.
“He represented his club with dedication, heart and commitment, leaving a lasting impression on athletes, officials, friends and the wider sporting community.”
The association also extended condolences to those mourning his loss.
“During this very difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, Sprint Tech Athletics Club, teammates and all who have been affected by this tremendous loss,” the statement continued.
“May they find strength, comfort and peace through the support of the sporting community and the cherished memories shared with him.”
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Roberts’ death remain ongoing.
