A striking image of a wheelchair positioned beneath a dramatic spotlight has been shared ahead of this year’s observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, symbolizing dignity, visibility, and empowerment. Saint Lucia will join the rest of the world, today, December 3 as the Ministry of Home Affairs and Persons with Disabilities hosts a Disability Awareness Fair at the Vieux Fort Square from 10 a.m.
The event aims to promote inclusion, challenge stereotypes, and showcase the achievements of persons with disabilities across the island.
President of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities, Merphilus James, said that society still struggles with outdated and harmful assumptions.
“People with disabilities are being treated as objects of charity. As people who are suffering from something, who are ill, who are bedridden, who are just waiting around for charity and handouts. This is a common misconception that we constantly have to challenge in our work.”
James emphasized that persons with disabilities are represented in every aspect of national life.
“People with disabilities are in all walks of life, in academia, in the performing arts, in technology, in science,” he said.
He noted that equal access and adequate support are key to unlocking full participation.
“People with disabilities are given an equal opportunity, are given the right support, resources and technology, we can not just participate, but we can thrive in society,” he said. According to him, the awareness fair provides exactly that space. “Events such as these create that space where members of the public can come and interact and see the work, the triumphs of people with disabilities.”
Organizers say the fair will feature performances, exhibitions, technology demonstrations, and booths hosted by advocacy groups dedicated to building a more inclusive Saint Lucia.
