The Saint Lucia–Cuba Friendship Association is preparing for a landmark gathering this weekend, marking nearly two decades of people-to-people diplomacy between the two nations.
Members will convene to honour history, elect new leadership, and chart the organisation’s direction for the next two years.
President of the Friendship Association, Marlene Alexander, outlined the significance of the opening session.
She said, “During the opening session, we will pay tribute to the late president and commander-in-chief, Fidel Castro, on the ninth anniversary of his death. We will also recognize longstanding members for their commitment to the organization.”
The weekend event will feature remarks from the Cuban ambassador to Saint Lucia, Her Excellency Venialis Linares, along with other invited speakers.
According to Alexander, “The main agenda item for this meeting will include elections of officers to serve on the new executive committee for the next two years, 2025 to 2027.”
The association is also using the meeting to support a humanitarian cause.
Alexander announced: “We also have a call for donation for support for Cuba for the hurricane relief fund. We posted that out and we are also calling on members of the public, friends of Cuba, to join in the drive for the Cuban cause.”
The weekend gathering is expected to be a significant moment for the association, reaffirming its long-standing mission of fostering cultural ties, solidarity, and community support between Saint Lucia and Cuba.
