A 34-year-old man has been formally charged in connection with the homicide of 24-year-old Joy St Omer, whose death has sparked widespread public concern and renewed national discussion surrounding domestic violence and public safety in Saint Lucia.
In a statement issued on May 26, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force said the Major Crimes Unit had charged Primus Toussaint of Belvedere, Canaries, in relation to the fatal shooting, which occurred in Marigot, Castries, on May 20, 2026.
According to the police, “On May 20, 2026, Toussaint reported himself to the Criminal Investigations Department accompanied by his lawyer and was subsequently arrested and detained.”
The statement further noted that Toussaint “was formally charged with the offence of Murder on Saturday, May 23, 2026.”
Police also confirmed that on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the accused appeared before the Magistrate’s Court, where he was remanded in custody.
Joy St Omer, of Au Tabor, Anse La Raye, was found motionless in the driver’s seat of a vehicle after officers attached to the Marigot Police Station responded to reports of a homicide at approximately 6:39 p.m. on May 20.
Emergency personnel later confirmed that the young woman had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case has generated national outrage, particularly after police confirmed there had been prior reports involving the suspect and that an active Protection Order had been in place in favor of the deceased at the time of the killing.
The matter remains under investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.
