The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has launched a sweeping crackdown on organized criminal networks operating through the island’s ports, revealing deep-rooted corruption among a small group of employees aiding the illicit trade in guns and drugs.
At a police press conference held on October 30th, senior law enforcement officials detailed the alarming discoveries and warned that arrests and major confrontations are imminent.
Inspector Shervon Mathieu, head of the Gang, Narcotics, and Firearms Unit, said investigations have uncovered evidence of coordinated criminal infiltration at key ports.
“What we noticed as law enforcement, we have uncovered an organized effort involving a small number of seaport employees who have been facilitating the importation and the clearing of illicit drugs and firearms through our ports,” Mathieu disclosed.
The inspector confirmed that recent police operations have led to the seizure of 17 firearms and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition, marking one of the most significant blows against transnational crime in recent years.
Commissioner of Police Verne Garde voiced concern over the scale of the criminal financing behind the illegal weapons trade, drawing a sharp contrast with the financial limitations faced by law enforcement.
“I’m one of the higher-paid public servants in Saint Lucia and it’s been a difficult time for me when it comes to assets and resources,” he admitted. “And I see persons are utilizing tens and $20,000 to purchase, for example, arms and ammunition.”
Commissioner Garde said the police will not only pursue criminal charges but will also target the financial assets of those involved.
“So, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, Mr. Mathieu, will look at these people and we will deal with them against the forfeiture of assets legislation,” he stated firmly.
The police have not yet disclosed how many individuals are under investigation but assured the public that decisive action is forthcoming.
