Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has held discussions with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on the ongoing regional process concerning the reappointment of CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett, as the matter moves towards clarification through the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).
Pierre said the meeting provided an opportunity for both leaders to update each other on developments surrounding the issue, with Trinidad and Tobago having prepared its position on the matter.
“So we went to update each other. I updated her as to where we were, as CARICOM, and she updated me as to what the Government of Trinidad was doing in terms of asking for that opinion,” Pierre said.
He described the discussions as “a very cordial meeting”.
According to Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago has now prepared its position, which will subsequently be reviewed through CARICOM’s council.
“Where we are is Trinidad has prepared, has prepared their position. CARICOM will review it through its council,” he said.
Pierre also sought to clarify the role of the CARICOM Secretary-General and the Council of CARICOM in the ongoing process.
He said both have removed themselves from the process and are not participating in the consideration of the matter.
“And I want to tell you that the Secretary General of CARICOM and the Council of CARICOM have excused themselves from the process,” Pierre said.
“They are not involved in the process at all.”
Pierre repeated the point to underscore the distinction between the regional review and the individuals and institutions directly connected to the Secretary-General’s office.
“Neither the Secretary General of CARICOM nor the Council of CARICOM is involved in the process,” he said.
The discussions come as regional governments continue to address the circumstances surrounding Dr Barnett’s reappointment, with the CCJ expected to provide clarification as the matter progresses.
