The Millennium Heights Medical Complex (MHMC) is pursuing a new strategy aimed at improving patient care, modernizing operations and addressing some of the major challenges facing Saint Lucia’s healthcare system.
The institution’s leadership has identified overcrowding, limited bed capacity, financial pressures and increasing demand for services as key areas requiring attention, with a four-point plan now being implemented to improve efficiency and strengthen healthcare delivery.
Speaking at a press conference on July 29, 2026, MHMC Chief Executive Officer Damian Greaves acknowledged the impact that capacity constraints have on patients, families and healthcare workers.
“When every ward bed is occupied, a patient who needs to be admitted may have to remain in the emergency department longer than anyone would like,” Greaves said. “Of course, that affects the patient, it affects the family, it places added pressure on our doctors, our nurses, and support staff. Indeed, it also affects the next person arriving for emergency care.”
One of the key priorities of the strategy focuses on improving patient flow within the hospital through a review of bed management, admissions and discharge processes.
The initiative also encourages greater use of community wellness centers for non-emergency cases, with the aim of reducing pressure on hospital services, improving bed availability and enhancing the overall patient experience.
Greaves said addressing financial obligations owed to the hospital is also critical to maintaining the quality of services provided.
“As we speak, the public owes the hospital 20.5 million dollars,” he said.
He noted that MHMC recognizes that some patients qualify for exemptions and that individuals have different financial circumstances.
“We recognize that some patients qualify for exemptions and that people’s financial circumstances differ,” Greaves said. “However, where fees are payable, settling hospital bills helps the institution support essential services, repair equipment, and purchase supplies needed for patient care.”
The CEO said strengthening the hospital’s workforce is another major component of the institution’s development plans.
MHMC is expanding opportunities for staff through investment in training and professional development, including programmes focused on clinical skills, leadership, customer service and information technology.
“This includes clinical training, leadership development, customer service, information technology and other areas that are essential to modern health care,” Greaves said.
The hospital is also seeking partnerships with institutions locally, regionally and internationally to provide additional opportunities for employees.
“We are also developing partnerships with local, regional and international institutions to create more opportunities for our employees,” he said.
Greaves said the overall objective is to build a healthcare system that is more responsive, efficient and sustainable while ensuring that patients receive quality care.
The four-point strategy forms part of MHMC’s broader efforts to adapt to growing healthcare demands and strengthen the institution’s role as a leading provider of medical services in Saint Lucia.
