The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is sounding the alarm as Saint Lucia enters the most active months of the flu season, which spans October to March. With respiratory infections increasing, officials are encouraging residents to take immediate precautions.
Medical Surveillance Officer Dr. Dana Da Costa Gomez said the Ministry is closely tracking the viruses now circulating in the population.
She reported that “the Ministry of Health remains vigilant in monitoring circulating respiratory viruses to guide our preparedness and response measures.”
Global data shows “low activity of the COVID-19 virus” but “increasing circulation of the respiratory syncytial virus and the seasonal influenza virus, specifically influenza A subtype H3N2.” She noted that “similar trends” are emerging in Saint Lucia.
Dr. Da Costa Gomez said the respiratory syncytial virus is currently active, but that “the seasonal influenza virus is currently the most active virus and is the leading cause of many respiratory symptoms in the country.”
She confirmed that influenza A subtype H3N2 “has been detected in individuals presenting respiratory symptoms at our healthcare facilities.”
The Ministry is urging the public to take simple but effective precautions.
Dr. Da Costa Gomez advised residents to “wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.” She encouraged everyone to “avoid close contact with individuals who are sick” and to “wear a mask if you are sick or caring for someone who is ill with respiratory symptoms.”
She also reminded the public to “cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing” and to disinfect frequently touched surfaces. She added that those who feel ill should “avoid going to work or school.”
