Saint Lucia is heightening its public health response as the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs moves to curb the spread of influenza during the current flu season, amid rising global cases of Influenza A H3N2.
National Epidemiologist Dr Michelle Francois said the flu season, which runs from October to March, has prompted renewed action by health authorities in light of international trends.
“As we navigate the current flu season, which extends from October to March, and in response to the global increase in circulation of influenza A H3N2 subclade K, the Ministry of Health is reintroducing two key initiatives,” Dr Francois explained.
She said the measures include updated clinical guidance and added protective resources.
“The circulation of protocols for the management of individuals infected with respiratory viruses and the procurement of face masks for distribution across various sectors,” she noted.
Dr Francois urged the public to take full advantage of these interventions, stressing that prevention remains the most effective tool.
“We encourage everyone to make use of these resources as a preventive measure. In light of these developments, the ministry urges the public and stakeholders to remain vigilant and to take preventive action,” she said.
Health officials are advising residents to adhere to basic but proven public health practices.
“This includes practicing good respiratory hygiene, cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands frequently, avoid close contact with sick individuals, and wear a mask when crowded or indoor public settings,” Dr Francois stated.
Vaccination is also being strongly encouraged, particularly for those most at risk of severe illness. “Getting vaccinated as soon as possible, especially if you are in a high risk group, such as older adults, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions, and young children, or if you are frontline or essential worker,” she advised.
Dr Francois confirmed that vaccines are readily accessible. “The Pfizer vaccine is now available in country. This is a COVID 19 vaccine. Members of the public who wish to get vaccinated can do so by visiting any community wellness center Monday to Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.,” she said.
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation closely and is calling on the public to remain alert and proactive as the flu season progresses.
