A tragic minibus crash in Ma Jomel, Laborie, has left the nation in mourning after three people, including a young girl with special educational needs, lost their lives over the long weekend.
The vehicle was discovered in a precipice on the morning of February 24th, 2026, sending shockwaves through the south of the island and prompting an outpouring of grief from residents and national leaders alike.
Parliamentary Representative for Vieux Fort South, Danny Butcher, expressed deep sympathy for the grieving family, acknowledging the emotional toll such tragedies take.
“I’ve always said the hardest part of this job so far is expressing condolences and always giving someone hope in a time that seems so, so difficult,” he said. “And I want the family to know that this is a government that cares, this is a ministry that cares, and they have our full support.”
He added, “It really broke our hearts. So again, I want to express our deepest condolences and like the good hymn says, I hope everyone who was affected by it gets strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.”
However, the tragedy has also sparked controversy following comments made by veteran talk show host Timothy Poleon during a live February 24th broadcast.
“As we come on the air, we have some breaking news to share with you. Unfortunately, in a part of Saint Lucia, Ma Jomel, Laborie to be exact, it appears that the mood is definitely red,” Poleon said.
The remark drew criticism from Butcher, who suggested it was inappropriate in the context of a fatal incident and could be interpreted as politically charged, referencing the Saint Lucia Labour Party’s recent campaign slogan.
“I do not mean to have any attack at his craft or his skill as a journalist,” Butcher stated.
“At the time, you need to express the highest level of sensitivity and condolences. Trying to get political mileage and political points, that is…I mean, in my mind, he should be reprimanded for it.”
As investigations into the circumstances of the incident continue, the focus for many remains on supporting the affected family and community as they come to terms with an irreplaceable loss.
