Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, in a statement on May 21, says the Government will provide financial assistance to vendors impacted by the transition associated with ongoing works at the Castries Vendors’ Arcade.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns from vendors and their representatives regarding the possible economic hardship resulting from relocation and disruptions tied to the redevelopment process.
According to the Prime Minister, the Government has already initiated a review to assess the impact the transition may have on vendors, including potential loss of income, in order to determine the level of support to be offered.
“Some form of financial support will be given to vendors who meet the requirements for that level of support,” Pierre stated.
The Prime Minister sought to reassure vendors that the Government remains committed to protecting the interests of Saint Lucians affected by the redevelopment initiative.
“I want to assure the vendors that the government will always see about the benefit of the people,” he said.
“The government will maintain that the people of Saint Lucia must come first,” Pierre added.
The Prime Minister also indicated that a formal announcement outlining the support package for affected vendors will be made soon.
“And very shortly, an announcement will be made on the level of support that will be given to the vendors involved,” he stated.
The issue of relocation and compensation has become a major concern for vendors operating at the Castries Vendors’ Arcade, with representatives recently calling on authorities to implement measures to reduce the financial strain associated with the transition period.
The redevelopment project forms part of wider efforts aimed at modernizing infrastructure within the capital while improving the overall commercial and tourism environment in Castries.
