The St Lucia Times is reporting that Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet has officially stepped down as Political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), following the party’s overwhelming defeat in the 2025 General Election.
The UWP managed to secure just one seat, Chastanet’s own constituency of Micoud South, in the December 1 election.
The Saint Lucia Labour Party won 14 seats, while two independent candidates aligned with the government side captured the remaining constituencies.
In a reported statement issued on December 5, the party confirmed receiving Chastanet’s resignation.
“During the course of the strategic meeting, the Chairman of the United Workers Party, Mr. Therold Prudent, formally advised the gathering that he is in receipt of a letter from the Political Leader Allen Chastanet, in which Mr. Chastanet tenders his resignation as Political Leader of the United Workers Party. It is to be formally tabled for consideration by the National Executive at its next scheduled meeting during the second week of December 2025,” the release said.
Neither the UWP nor Chastanet has released a statement on the reported resignation on their social media pages.
