Twenty-one-year-old Shardel Deterville of Mole Street, Anse La Raye, has been identified as Saint Lucia’s eleventh homicide victim for 2026 after dying from gunshot injuries sustained during a shooting at approximately 11:00 pm on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026.
A security guard who was on duty nearby said he heard multiple gunshots moments before discovering the victim.
“I sat down and was looking at some YouTube. I heard like gunshots just offloading,” he recounted.
Concerned that someone might have been injured, the guard immediately contacted emergency services.
“So, like I ran out of my office dialing 911 one time too and making them know where I heard gunshots and probably somebody got shot but I haven’t seen anybody yet.”
Shortly after, he spotted the victim lying on the roadway. He said he remained nearby while awaiting the arrival of law enforcement officers.
“I called the police, they told me they’re coming; I stayed there and I stayed a distance from the body.”
Deterville’s mother, Natalie Deterville, described her son as lively and well known within the community, while expressing sorrow and frustration over his death.
“My son was a special son, right? Very special with everybody,” she said. “But they shot him because he spoke for his mouth, they shot him, right? Because he was involved in another problem and they just shot him for that.”
She believes the shooting may have been a retaliatory act.
“They went, and they came back and they shot him, right?” she stated.
While acknowledging that her son sometimes reacted emotionally in tense situations, she maintained that he was a kind-hearted individual.
“So, my son was a good person. He’s jovial with everybody in the village. Sometimes he will react to things that made him vex…but he was kind and he was good.”
Deterville’s death adds to the growing toll of gun-related killings in Saint Lucia this year.
