Former Prime Minister Allen Chastanet on Sunday confirmed that he has formally tendered his resignation as Political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), ending days of speculation following the party’s heavy defeat in the December 1 general election.
The Micoud South MP addressed the development directly in a statement posted to his official Facebook page on Sunday, 7th December, where he sought to “clarify some misunderstandings” surrounding his decision to step down.
“Happy Sunday, everyone. I wish to clarify some misunderstandings surrounding my resignation as Political Leader of the United Workers Party,” Chastanet wrote.
He stressed that although he has relinquished the leadership of the party, his commitment to his constituency remains strong and unwavering. “Whilst I have stepped aside from my role as political leader, my dedication to the people of Micoud South remains unchanged,” he said.
Chastanet, who secured the UWP’s lone seat in the recent election, expressed deep gratitude to his constituents. “I am eternally grateful for their love, support and steadfast encouragement over these many years and I want to reassure them that I will remain your Parliamentary Representative as long as you choose to have me,” he said. “I will always have and keep the best interests of the people of Micoud South at heart.”
He further promised that his constituents would play a central role in determining his future political direction. “Please rest assured that you will be an integral part of any decision made about my next steps politically or otherwise,” he added.
Chastanet’s resignation marks a significant moment for the UWP, which now faces the task of reorganizing and rebuilding following its electoral losses. The party has not yet announced a successor.
