The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has announced a seven-day Firearm Amnesty aimed at reducing the number of illegal weapons in communities across the island and strengthening public safety.
The amnesty provides individuals with an opportunity to surrender illegal firearms and ammunition with no rewards offered and no questions asked.
Authorities say the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to curb gun-related crime and create safer neighborhoods for families and communities.
The Firearm Amnesty will be conducted in two phases. Phase one runs from Monday, January 19 to Thursday, January 22, while phase two is scheduled for Monday, January 26 to Wednesday, January 28.
Members of the public can surrender firearms and ammunition between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at any police station or fire station across the island. Individuals may also contact any correctional officer to facilitate the surrender.
For those who prefer alternative arrangements, the RSLPF has indicated that firearms and ammunition can be surrendered through a lawyer. Persons may also call 555 or 999 to arrange a safe pick-up by the authorities.
The Police Force is encouraging citizens to take advantage of the amnesty period, stressing that the initiative is about protecting lives and preventing violence before it occurs.
Officials are urging the public to work together in the interest of national safety, with the message being clear: put the gun down and help keep Saint Lucia’s families and neighborhoods safe.
