The victim of a 2025 hit-and-run accident remains hospitalised as she continues a long and painful road to recovery, while the driver responsible for the incident remains at large.
Loved ones say her life has been completely upended, with severe injuries leaving her unable to work and her family struggling to meet mounting medical and daily expenses.
Speaking anonymously to the press, a cousin of Marcelle Remy recounted the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred as Remy waited for public transportation.
“She was waiting for a bus just before the gas station there and a vehicle crashed into her and another co-worker. Unfortunately, she took most of the blows, and the driver basically drove off,” the relative said.
The family believes the driver only came forward after evidence was left behind at the scene.
“If it wasn’t for the fact that the number plate broke off, I don’t think this person would have confessed to what he did,” the cousin stated. “That’s sadly what happened in Saint Lucia. Persons are just committing unsavoury crimes like that. I’ll say crimes because they do it, and then they run from the scene.”
The relative appealed directly to the driver, urging accountability and compassion.
“You do something like that. You may not have your licence, your insurance, whatever the case may be, but come forward, confess to what you did, because you never know what the family is going through right now,” they said.
Remy’s injuries are extensive and life-altering. According to her cousin, both her arms and legs were broken in the impact.
“No one was expecting that. Both her legs are broken. Both her arms are broken. She has six fractured ribs,” the relative explained.
Beyond the physical trauma, the financial burden has fallen heavily on her family.
“All this expense now is on the family. Now we must work around the time for those who have to go in and feed her, who’s washing the clothes, and who’s doing this financial aid. We have to try and see how we can come up with all the money, so it’s a lot right now,” the cousin said.
The family is appealing to the public for assistance, particularly blood donations and financial support.
“We’re asking for blood donations for her, and they can do so at the OKEU Hospital…also for financial support, if possible,” the relative added.
Despite her injuries, Remy is said to be maintaining a positive outlook.
“Currently, I would say she’s in good spirits. Good spirits because everyone is around her. Family is there,” the cousin said. “I want to say thank you to her co-workers. They came by to see her this week, so it was really nice of them. Everyone’s worried.”
Police investigations into the hit-and-run are ongoing, as the family continues to hope for justice, accountability, and the support needed to aid Remy’s recovery.
