The Castries Constituency Council is expanding its employee welfare initiatives, placing renewed emphasis on physical health, wellness education, and preventive care for its workforce.
The move builds on earlier programmes centred on financial literacy and reflects a broader strategy to improve the overall quality of life for council employees.
Mayor of Castries, Geraldine Lendor-Gabriel, said the Council has been working closely with the National Workers Union to ensure that employee wellbeing remains a shared priority.
“One of the things that we’ve been able to do quite well is to work closely with the National Workers Union in terms of helping us do better with our workers,” Mayor Lendor-Gabriel explained.
“So we have initiated dialogue with them as we would want to see us work closely with the workers to improve overall wellness.”
She noted that insights gained from routine health assessments have highlighted the need for greater intervention, particularly in addressing lifestyle-related illnesses among staff.
“We know that there are a lot of lifestyle diseases. Through our annual medical check-up, we have been able to ascertain that there’s a need for intervention in terms of letting the workers become more aware and taking more practical steps for their overall wellness,” the Mayor said.
According to Lendor-Gabriel, the Council recognises that employees play a critical role in safeguarding public health through their daily duties, which include drain cleaning, verge maintenance, and waste management.
She stressed that caring for workers’ health is essential, not only for their personal wellbeing but also for the wider community.
“They not only can assist the society in terms of its wellness, because when employees are engaged in cleaning drains and managing waste, they’re actually protecting the health of the nation, but they too have to take care of themselves in the process,” she said. “And so that will be our message to them.”
The Castries Constituency Council says the enhanced focus on wellness will include health education, awareness initiatives, and partnerships aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles among employees, reinforcing the link between worker wellbeing and effective public service.
