As the new academic year gets underway on January 6th, Minister for Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation Hon. Kenson Casimir has extended best wishes to students, parents, teachers and school administrators, outlining an ambitious vision for learning and national development.
In his first back-to-school message since assuming the portfolio, Casimir described the moment as both an honour and a responsibility, as he welcomed the education community to what he called a promising new term.
“It is a privilege as the newly appointed Minister of Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation to welcome you back to another promising school term,” Casimir said. “As I embrace this new responsibility, I reflect deeply on what the future of education can and must look like under my stewardship.”
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Philip J Pierre for the confidence placed in him and acknowledged the contributions of his ministerial colleagues.
“I thank the Prime Minister for entrusting me with the care and development of our future leaders,” Casimir stated, while also recognizing the work of former minister Shawn Edward and noting that “the work Minister Edward began will be built upon, strengthened and expanded as we continue this important journey together.”
According to Casimir, the start of the school year represents more than the resumption of classes.
“Today marks not only the start of a new academic term, but also the continuation of our collective journey to build a 21st-century education system that prepares every learner for success, be it academically, socially, or personally,” he said.
The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to equity and quality across the system, emphasizing that education must equip students for a rapidly evolving world.
“We remain committed to creating equitable, high-quality learning experiences that empower all students with the knowledge, skills, and values required to thrive,” he noted.
Addressing students directly, Casimir encouraged them to embrace the year ahead with confidence and curiosity.
“I want you to know that this year is filled with opportunity. Opportunity to learn with curiosity, to ask bold questions, to engage collectively, and to push boundaries,” he said. He added that the government remains invested in supporting diverse aspirations, whether in academics, sports, community service, or the digital space.
“Education is not just about passing exams. It’s about building confidence and character,” Casimir emphasized.
He reserved special praise for educators, describing them as central to the success of the system. “To our teachers and staff, thank you for your dedication. You are the backbone of our education system,” he said. “Every lesson you plan and every word of encouragement you offer leaves a lasting impression.”
Casimir pledged to work closely with educators to ensure they receive the training, resources and support needed to succeed in their profession.
Parents and guardians were also urged to remain actively engaged in their children’s education.
“Your partnership is indispensable. We cannot do it without you,” the minister stated. “Education is a shared responsibility. And when homes, schools, and communities work together, we amplify our children’s chances for success.”
Drawing on his experience in youth development and sports, Casimir said he intends to bring the same approach to education policy.
“As your minister, I bring the same energy, passion, and commitment you have seen from my work in youth development and sports,” he said. “Now, we take that spirit and apply it across the education landscape, nurturing not just the athlete or artist, but the critical thinker, the coder, the entrepreneur, and the problem solver.”
Casimir concluded by expressing confidence that, together, the nation can begin what he described as “a fresh chapter in learning, growth and education transformation.”
