International Volunteer Day, celebrated this year on December 5th, is shining a global spotlight on the transformative power of community service under the theme “Every Contribution Matters.”
The observance also marks the official launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development. This initiative underscores the importance of volunteerism in bridging generations and advancing long-term development goals.
In Saint Lucia, the Do-Nation Foundation is once again at the forefront of these efforts, championing volunteerism as both a national duty and a pathway to stronger, more resilient communities.
Founder of the Do-Nation Foundation, Diane Felicien, said she has seen the impact of volunteerism ripple across the island.
“As the Do-Nation leader for Saint Lucia and the Caribbean, I have witnessed firsthand how our young people, families and communities rise to every challenge with every courage and generosity,” she said. “From environmental cleanups and youth development sessions to gender based violence advocacy, climate resilience programs and empowerment for our rural women. Volunteers are the engine that drives real change.”
Felicien noted that volunteers have made a difference in communities across Micoud, Dennery, Anse La Raye, Canaries, Vieux Fort and Babonneau. “They have worked in schools, communities, shelters, and with vulnerable groups, ensuring that every hope reaches everyone, especially those most in need,” she said.
For the Do-Nation Foundation, the call to serve is also a call to strengthen the nation. “This year, our message is simple. Volunteerism is not just service, it is nation building. Every citizen, every young person, every organization has a role to play,” Felicien explained.
She added that International Volunteer Day serves as a powerful reminder of the value of everyday kindness.
“International Volunteers Day is a powerful reminder that every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to building a stronger, safer, more compassionate community,” she said. “For us at Do-Nation Foundation, volunteerism is not just an activity. It is a lifestyle, a movement, and a shared responsibility.”
As the world ushers in the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, organizations like the Do-Nation Foundation say they will continue expanding programs that empower citizens and uplift communities. Saint Lucians are being encouraged to step forward, give of their time, and help build a more inclusive and caring society.
