The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) has commenced a major upgrade of Saint Lucia’s northern water network, replacing an ageing pipeline as part of efforts to strengthen supply and improve reliability in the north of the island.
The project involves active works from Bonne Terre Gap towards WASCO Station A in the vicinity of the Bank of Saint Lucia in Gros Islet, with construction expected to continue beyond that point.
WASCO Corporate Communications Officer Tovah Gibson said the works are already underway and urged motorists and members of the public to exercise caution around construction areas.
“We have active works going on from the Bonne Terre Gap to as far as Wasco Station A, which is in the vicinity of a Bank of Saint Lucia, Gros Islet and the works will progress beyond that point,” Gibson said.
“We’re asking the public to exercise caution in the vicinity of the work site and to use alternate routes where possible.”
Gibson said customers should not experience significant disruptions during the construction phase because the existing pipeline remains operational.
“Customers should not expect any major delay to their supply,” she said.
“The works do not affect the existing line, so supply continues as normal during construction.”
She said there could, however, be a temporary interruption when the upgraded system is commissioned.
“At the point of commissioning, there may be a brief interruption, of which the public will be informed in advance,” Gibson said.
The upgrade is one of three projects being undertaken to strengthen the northern water supply network.
The pipeline being replaced has been in service for more than four decades and has reached the end of its service life. The project is expected to increase water capacity and improve the reliability of supply to communities in the north.
WASCO is encouraging residents and motorists to remain alert around active work areas as construction progresses.
