Julien Alfred crossed the finish line first in the women’s 100 meters at the Gyulai István Memorial on Tuesday, July 14, adding to Alfred’s string of victories this athletic season.
Alfred ran 10.87 seconds at the National Athletics Centre, fighting a 0.3 meters-per-second headwind to beat Jamaica’s Tina Clayton by a tenth of a second.
Clayton took second in 10.97. Jamaica’s Brianna Lyston finished third in 11.01, and Elaine Thompson-Herah, the two-time Olympic sprint double winner, placed fourth in 11.04 as she continues her comeback.
Jonielle Smith rounded out Jamaica’s group in sixth at 11.12, while former Jamaican sprinter Christania Williams, competing for Austria, finished seventh in 11.28.
Commending the sprint queen in a public post to his Facebook page was Prime Minister Philip J Pierre.
“Julien continues to inspire our nation through her consistency, determination and pursuit of excellence. Every race is another reminder that Saint Lucian talent can compete with, and triumph over, the very best in the world,” Pierre wrote.
“The Government and people of Saint Lucia celebrate this latest achievement and wish you continued success throughout the season,” he continued.
On July 10, Alfred lit up the Monaco Diamond League with a sensational 200m win in 21.51, the third-fastest time ever recorded. She will race American sprinter Gabby Thomas, this weekend in London.
