Venezuela is entering a recovery phase following two major earthquakes that caused widespread destruction across the country, with thousands of people affected, significant infrastructure damage recorded, and international assistance now underway.
The update was provided by the Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Leiff Escalona, during an appearance on Claudius Francis’ “Straight Up” talk show, where he outlined the scale of the disaster and ongoing recovery efforts.
Escalona said the country has recorded hundreds of seismic activities in the aftermath of the initial quakes.
“A total of 611 seismic events have been registered including 609 aftershocks nationwide,” she said.
She detailed the extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure across affected areas.
“855 buildings were affected. 189 collapsed completely and 666 suffered partial or severe damage.”
The Ambassador also provided updated figures on casualties and displacement, describing the scale of human impact as severe.
“The fatalities that we have confirmed is 1719 confirmed fatalities,” Escalona stated. “5,034 people injured, 15,866 people displaced and 12,400 people medically treated.”
She added that emergency response teams have been working to provide urgent care to those affected, particularly in heavily impacted regions.
“4,093 received direct medical assistance in La Guaira,” he said.
Escalona noted that despite the early disruption to essential services, significant progress has been made in restoring critical infrastructure such as electricity and communications.
“A lot of infrastructure and services has been restored now in the area electricity service, internet, because the first two days after the earthquake was very difficult to establish communication with them,” he explained.
She also highlighted the scale of international support being received as Venezuela continues recovery and rebuilding efforts.
“And the efforts that we received from the international countries, a lot of response from imagine more than 45 countries are helping us directly,” the Ambassador said.
As recovery operations continue, authorities say the focus remains on rebuilding damaged communities, restoring essential services, and supporting thousands of displaced citizens in the aftermath of one of the country’s most significant recent natural disasters.
