Public Service Minister Stephenson King has called for a renewed commitment to innovation, professionalism and citizen-centered delivery as Saint Lucia marks Public Service Week 2026 under the theme “Transforming the Public Sector to Optimize Productivity and Service Delivery, Advancing Innovation, Participation and Inclusion.”
In his Public Service Day message, Minister King said the theme directly reflects the responsibility placed on public officers to continuously improve how services are delivered to the public.
“This theme speaks directly to our collective responsibility to continually improve the way we serve the people of Saint Lucia,” he said. “It challenges us to embrace innovation, strengthen collaboration, and create opportunities for greater participation and inclusion across all levels of the public service.”
He emphasized that public officers carry a significant duty in shaping the daily experiences of citizens through essential service delivery.
“As public officers, we’re interested with the responsibility of delivering essential services that affect the daily lives of our citizens,” King stated. “In an ever-evolving world, we must remain adaptable, forward-thinking, creative, innovative, and committed to excellence.”
The Minister stressed that transformation within the public sector must go beyond technological upgrades, pointing instead to the importance of institutional culture and values.
“Transformation is not merely about technology or modernization,” he said. “It is about cultivating a culture of efficiency, accountability, professionalism, and people-centered service delivery.”
He added that public servants must ensure their work meets the expectations of the population while also striving for continuous improvement.
“We need to meet the expectations of the people, the citizens of our land,” King said. “We must have the right mindset and cultivate exemplary behaviour.”
Reflecting on the significance of Public Service Week, King described it as an opportunity for reflection, recognition and recommitment to national development.
“This year’s Public Service Week provides an excellent opportunity for us to reflect on our achievements, celebrate our contributions and reaffirm our commitment to national development,” he said. “We cannot be contented with what we have achieved to date. We need to reach out beyond the limits of the expectations of our people who we serve and do even better for them.”
He noted that the week of activities officially began on Sunday, June 21, with a church service at Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Leclerc, describing it as a moment of gratitude for public officers.
“Our week of activities, which officially began this Sunday, June 21, with a church service at Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima Roman Catholic Church at Leclerc, was attended by many of you who gathered in thanksgiving in honor of the dedication and sacrifices of public officers throughout the nation,” King said.
A range of activities has been scheduled throughout the week aimed at engaging officers and the wider public, including outreach, education and professional development initiatives.
“Throughout this week, a series of engaging activities will be rolled out, planned to educate, empower and connect public officers and the wider public,” he explained.
Among the planned events are a public service roadshow, career awareness initiatives, training workshops and the annual public service fair.
“These include a public service roadshow which will bring government services closer to communities, a career awareness day activity designed to inspire and inform future generations about careers in public service, while a number of professional development workshops aimed at enhancing the skills and competences of our workforce and our highly anticipated annual public service fair where ministries and departments will showcase their work, services and achievements,” he said.
King also highlighted the importance of team-building and camaraderie through the inter-ministry domino competition scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 25.
“The spirit of friendly competition continues with the upcoming inter-ministry department domino competition, which is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, June 25,” he said.
He described the activities as more than recreational, arguing that they play an important role in strengthening institutional cohesion and morale.
“This initiative offers yet another opportunity for public officers from different agencies to interact, strengthen professional relationships, and promote unity across the public service,” King stated. “These activities are far more than recreational events. They help build morale, encourage teamwork, improve communication, and foster a sense of belonging among officers.”
