Government officials, family members, dignitaries and members of the public gathered at the House of Parliament on Wednesday to pay their final respects to former Governor-General Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, whose body lay in state ahead of his funeral.
The solemn observance provided Saint Lucians with an opportunity to honor the life and legacy of one of the country’s most distinguished public servants, whose contributions to national life spanned decades in politics and public service.
Among those in attendance were Governor-General Sir Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, Leader of the Opposition Allen Chastanet, senior government officials, family members, friends and members of the wider public.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Acting Solicitor-General Seryozha Cenac expressed gratitude for the overwhelming show of support and affection demonstrated throughout the day.
“We’re very happy with the response that we’ve received,” Cenac said.
“The Governor General attended as well as our Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Many other officials attended this morning. And we saw many family and friends and other members of the public.”
He added, “And so we’re very happy and pleased with the turnout today in remembrance of our dad.”
Reflecting on the many roles Sir Neville played throughout his life, Cenac said his father’s legacy extended far beyond public office.
“I think he will be remembered by many things,” he said. “He was a politician, he was a father, he was a husband, he was a brother, and he was a son.”
Cenac described Sir Neville as a devoted patriot who dedicated himself to the service of Saint Lucia through various capacities over the course of his life.
“He loved his country, he served in many capacities, and we will certainly miss him,” he said.
He also encouraged those whose lives had been touched by Sir Neville to cherish those memories and reflect on the impact he had on others.
“We would be most pleased if everyone who knew him well kept in memory, in their hearts, and to always remember how he touched their lives and how he served the people of Saint Lucia,” Cenac added.
Sir Neville served Saint Lucia in several prominent roles throughout his distinguished career, including as a parliamentarian, Cabinet minister and, most recently, as Governor-General from 2018 to 2021. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum and wider society, with many remembering him as a statesman whose commitment to national service remained unwavering.
As mourners filed quietly through the House of Parliament, many paused to reflect not only on Sir Neville’s achievements in public life, but also on the personal qualities of humility, dedication and compassion that endeared him to generations of Saint Lucians.
