Citizens across Saint Lucia are mourning the passing of former Governor General Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, with government officials confirming that arrangements are now underway for a state funeral in recognition of his decades of public service.
Prime Minister Philip J Pierre, speaking on the national loss, described Sir Neville Cenac as a figure whose public life spanned multiple senior roles in national governance.
“We mourn the loss of former Governor General, Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, who passed away last week,” he said, noting that Cenac had served as “former leader of the opposition, former Minister of External Affairs, former leader of the Saint Lucia Labour Party, and he was the parliamentary representative for Labour.”
The Prime Minister confirmed that the State will accord Sir Neville Cenac full honors in keeping with established protocol.
“I have instructed that, following the usual protocol, that he will be awarded a state funeral, and the date of the state funeral will be announced shortly,” he stated.
He further announced national mourning measures, indicating that formal respect will be observed across government institutions.
“All flags will be flagged at half-mast and the normal protocols that are given to a deceased head of state,” the Prime Minister said.
Expressing personal and national condolences, Mr. Pierre added that he had already reached out to the family of the late former Governor General.
“I have already expressed my condolences in public, but once more I want to express … I called Lady Julieta Cenac this morning and we had a discussion,” he said.
He extended sympathies on behalf of the country, stating, “I want to express my condolences to the government and the people of Saint Lucia on the death of Sir Cenac. May his soul rest in peace.”
Sir Neville Cenac’s passing has prompted reflection on a public career marked by leadership at the highest levels of Saint Lucian politics and constitutional office.
