The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has issued a warning to criminal elements following an armed confrontation between officers and a suspect during targeted operations in Castries on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Central Division, Luke Defreitas, officers attached to the Guns, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, with support from other units within the force, were conducting operations aimed at suppressing violent crime and illegal firearm activity when the incident occurred along Chaussee Road in Castries.
“On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, officers of the Guns, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, supported by other units within the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, executed targeted operations within the Central Division to suppress violent crime and illegal firearm activity,” Defreitas stated.
He explained that officers encountered an armed suspect during the exercise and came under gunfire.
“During those operations, officers confronted an armed suspect along Chaussee Road, Castries. The suspect discharged multiple live rounds directly at duty officers, placing their lives in immediate danger,” he said.
Defreitas praised the officers’ conduct during the confrontation, noting that their response prevented a potentially fatal outcome.
“Officers responded with discipline and lawful restraint, narrowly avoiding serious injury or loss of life,” he added.
Police said a Glock 27 pistol was recovered during the incident and secured as evidence.
“In the course of the confrontation, a Glock 27 pistol was recovered and secured as evidence. This weapon, designed for close-range lethality, underscores the grave risk posed by individuals engaging in illegal firearm activity,” Defreitas said.
The Assistant Commissioner linked the incident to what he described as a growing trend of firearm-related violence across the island.
“This incident comes amid a marked upsurge in gun violence across the island, where criminal networks continue to traffic and use firearms with reckless disregard for public safety,” he noted.
Defreitas stressed that attacks against police officers would be treated as threats against national security.
“The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force emphasizes that such attacks on officers are direct attacks on the nation’s security and will not be tolerated,” he declared.
He also issued a warning to those involved in the incident, urging them to surrender to police custody.
“Those involved in this incident are urged to immediately surrender themselves to police custody as you have been identified. Law enforcement will persist relentlessly in dismantling firearm networks and bringing offenders to justice,” he stated.
Defreitas further cautioned criminals against interpreting the suspects’ escape as a victory over law enforcement.
“The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force warns the offenders and other criminal elements not to use this event as a precedent. While the offenders may have escaped, this was in the interest of and safety of the wider public. Under different circumstances, the outcome would have been different,” he said.
He concluded by commending the officers involved and calling on the public to support efforts to combat gun violence.
“The courage and professionalism displayed by the officers prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. The public is reminded that the fight against gun violence requires vigilance, cooperation and respect for the rule of law,” Defreitas said.
